AAHA performed archaeological mitigation actions associated with the renovation and upgrade of the facilities at Carolina Park in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington, DC. This work was conducted as an alternative mitigation strategy for potential impacts to an archaeological site to document disturbance outside the site’s two core areas and address unexpected discoveries that could arise during the proposed improvements to Carolina Park. The work was guided by a series of research questions designed to interpret any archaeological features or artifact concentrations encountered during the development. No archaeological features were encountered and all artifacts were recovered from disturbed contexts. In addition to the on-site archaeological monitoring, AAHA developed two interpretive panels presenting the precontact and historic setting of Carolina Park that were installed at the entrances in order to educate visitors on the rich history of the area.
