In August 2020, AAHA conducted research excavations at Calverton, the original seat of Calvert County on Battle Creek. Calverton is one of Maryland’s early colonial towns and is in imminent danger of destruction by sea-level rise and coastal erosion. These excavations were conducted in partnership with Calvert County and the Maryland Historical Trust and targeted potential features under direct threat of erosion and identified during a GPR survey. Along with successfully excavating a colonial cellar and fence line, AAHA was able to use GPS data and high-resolution DEMs to track the rate of coastal erosion at the site.
