In April 2021, AAHA conducted Phase IA archaeological assessments of the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore City, Maryland, and the Laurel Park Race Track in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The studies were conducted for the Maryland Stadium Authority in preparation for rehabilitation of the racetracks and included a review of previous cultural resources studies, historic mapping and documentation, environmental settings, cut-and-fill analysis, and an on-site pedestrian survey. As a result, it was determined that conventional methods for identifying archaeological sites will likely be ineffective in the built environments. Targeted archaeological monitoring in areas of potential archaeological deposits was recommended during ground-disturbing activities as an alternative to more traditional archaeological identification methods.
